Sacred Bingo
Bingo ... Sacred? Chat GPT says: It's just a game - "similar to lotto and often played simultaneously by large groups". So ... Since when is "bingo" ... sacred? In Sneads Ferry proceeds from monthly bingo are reverently dedicated by the Sneads Ferry Community Council to sustain the Community Center (126 Park Lane) a structure that was built to serve its residents and one that has been a part of the province and its history for over fifty years. Traditionally all the incom

March 2026
"From dawn to dusk, winter to spring ... the contrasts of nature refresh the mind & renew our sense of balance" Phil Harding What a Winter! Dear Province: I thought when I moved south, I would avoid the snow and sleet - but this past February we needed assistance maneuvering a car trailer over the snow banks and into the garage for fear of sliding right into the marina. Thank goodness for helpful neighbors. Now I look across that neighbor's yard and see welcome shades of gr

Conversation Cafe'
Lunch Bunch A couple of years ago, I thought I'd found a solution for a way to get to know people in Sneads Ferry as Ruth Roskiewich Bland stood outside the Sneads Ferry Community Council doors greeting every woman who was about to go into a meeting with an invitation to attend her new Sneads Ferry Lunch Bunch. I was so excited for a way to meet more ladies, find some common interests and expand my social circle here in the province. Ruth organized the Lunch Bunch to get to

Dreams
First Impressions While I was building our home in Sneads Ferry and before I moved here full time, I made a point to attend our Community Council meetings to get a feel for my new town. There I met some of the most interesting, passionate and driven locals ... some that I've lost touch with ... others who remain my close friends. One that I am so proud of and take inspiration from is Kristina Spackman who at that time was part of the local theater group in the midst of diss

Our Churches
Discovery When I was building my home in Sneads Ferry the sales rep for my plumbing company told me that one of the things she loved about living in Sneads Ferry was that the churches all work together to serve the community. I saw that in action the first time I attended the Annual Blessing of the Fleet in which our various pastors - some on the dock and some in the vessels - offered prayers and blessings for the ships and the fishermen for the upcoming shrimp season. Words
What Matters As a writer I know that words matter. When I approached this passion project, I knew I had to find a word to reference Sneads Ferry but I didn't want to steal any identifying word that was already being used, nor did I want to offend anyone. Sneads Ferry has been described and identified by the county and similar entities as a Waterside Community, an Unincorporated Village ... in the County of Onslow ... a part of the Stump Sound Township ... on the south end of

Connection
Confusion One of the first things that pop up on an online search for Sneads Ferry is " SneadsFerryNorthCarolina.com " - the home page for the Sneads Ferry Community Center (SFCC), 126 Park Lane, Sneads Ferry, NC 28460 and the Sneads Ferry Community Council - an organization that has been around and active for more than fifty years (also SFCC). I've been participating with them for a few years and I'm always amazed at how many people - both long-time residents and new arrival

White Pages
Practical Tools / Gone by the Wayside Back in Maryland we had a small local phone book just for our town that was super handy any time we needed services that we didn't already have a vendor for. Or, more likely the case, as we grew older our original vendor had retired and we needed to find a replacement. Mine had ruffled edges, bent corners, post-it notes sticking out of the pages, and circles around or stars next to the names of companies that I had used and liked. While b
